Lady Jayne is now finished.....

SOLD

Here she is all dressed up her finest silks.

She measures just over 20" from the top of her antique lace cap to her silk slippers.

She has a much more refined Queen Anne style face than some we more commonly see. She is typical of a doll of about 1740. She is nicely aged. Click on any photo to see a close up.
Her eyes are antique black glass pupiless hand blown eyes that I have been saving for a big doll. She is Big!
She stands well or sits easily with her jointed hips and legs.
She loves her silk brocade shoes, and what lady wouldn't!! I love making them.
If you would like to see more photos of Lady Jayne, in the making, just let me know.
Thanks for looking............

Doll Chatelaines

Today was one of those days where I just felt like straying from what I should be doing..........so, I made doll Chatelaines. Here are a couple of photos for you to see.

They are perfect for those early dolls after about 1730, from what I have read.....do enlighten me if you know more about dates for these pretties!
I was asked about these chatelaines several times yesterday, they are $45.00 each and I make several different ones.

Newest dolls.................

The doll on the right is now SOLD, the other 3 are available and being worked on.
I have been working away here on some new dolls. Four to be exact. Some of my doll followers have been asking to purchase one of my Queen Anne wooden dolls naked. I do have some that are near completion and just about ready to dress. If you have interest in a naked doll please email me to see what is new before I start to dress them. Also, if you are interested in a doll and would like to pick clothes, now is the time to see what is available. Feel free to email me for some photos of the faces and sizes that I have here right now. toysintheattic@sympatico.ca or call me 705 489-1046.
Thanks for your interest in my wooden Queen Anne dolls.

20" Lydia is finished and has found a new home. SOLD

Lydia is SOLD

I have a new doll started that is almost identical to Lydia, her name is Virginia. If you would like to see her so far, just email for photos. toysintheattic@sympatico.ca
Here is one of my finest Higgs type 1680 doll so far, I think!

She is 20" head to the toes of her silk slippers. The head piece, now the second one I have made for her is an additional 3" so she is quite a size. Her clothes are all handmade of antique 18th century silk and cottons. There are wonderful small bits of blind mending from a century ago on her stripe overskirt (I love that). She is fully jointed at the knees and hips and hand carved from basswood. Her eyes are 3 tone brown, just as the William Higgs dolls from 300+ years ago.

She truly looks old and impressive, much more so in person than in my photos.
Scroll down to yesterday's entry on my blog to see some other photos of her corset and photos in the making of Lydia.

I took photos of her from start to finish and if you would like more photos to see her corset or underclothes just email me toysintheattic@sympatico.ca

Lydia is looking for a good home and is available to purchase for $1850.00

If you have a big chair for her in your collection and would like to purchase Lydia for your collection just let me know.

Thanks for looking.

Naked Queen Anne Higgs type doll...

SOLD

I have been cleaning my studio all morning and un-earthing some things I did not even know I had!! How does this happen?

One thing I came across what a doll I had carved a while back and set aside to work on something else (that would be the artist in me doing that!)

Anyway, occasionally I sell a naked carved Queen Anne and let the new owner have the fun of dressing one.
I have one now that is available if anyone is interested. I have posted some photos here for you to see her and what she would look like dressed as the one I did last year. If you are at all interested in her or more photos, just email me: toysintheattic@sympatico.ca I suspect I will still be cleaning in here all day!!

18" Higgs style wooden doll......Martha

SOLD

Here we have Martha, all finished and dressed in her finest!

Her clothes are all hand stitched and made of antique fabrics. Her face and body are carved of basswood and the aging is intentional. She has tiny hand made shoes and painted stockings. She has kind of a 300 year old peasant look to her and wears her pocket outside her dress for you to see. It should be under her skirt but she is showing off!
Her eyes and eyebrows have tiny worn dots above them and Her typical higgs nose is skuffed a bit just as it would be if she were truly 300 years old. She has lovely long carved wooden fingers.
She is looking for home and if you would like more photos of Martha or any of my other woodend available at this time just email me toysintheattic@sympatico.ca or call me 705 489-1046 if you would like to chat about wooden dolls.
Thanks for looking

Lily........baby Higgs type wooden doll

SOLD

Here is baby Higgs. Her name is Lily and she is 15" long not including her long baby gown.

Enjoy!

toysintheattic@sympatico.ca for more photos, just email me.

17" Annie..... SOLD

SOLD

Here is Annie, probably the closest I have come to carving the very early Higgs type dolls.

They were originally carved by William Higgs around 1680-1690.

I love this style of doll, although they were known for their painted eyes rather than the glass eyes that are so associated with Queen Anne dolls today. Glass eyes came later.

This doll is 17" tall. She is dressed in very early french cotton print and has delightful little silk shoes/slippers that I have made for her. The wear on her is intentional and if you could see this doll, you would agree, she looks old!

Her knees and hips are jointed and her arms are linen at the tops, just as the originals were.
If you would like more photos of Annie or any other of the dolls that I have not had time to put on my blog, just email me toysintheattic@sympatico.ca and I would be happy to send you photos and pricing on what is available at this time. You may also call me at 705 489-1046 if you like to talk dolls!

Here is "Babes from the Woods", I invite you to come back often.
Since I was a child I loved dolls. Later, when I was 18 I started to collect antique dolls and left no rock unturned! When I was 21 I sold my collection and bought my first heritage stone home to restore. After restoring 12 homes, I am not moving again! Over the years I collected on and off and then took a huge interest in Antique Santas and holiday items from 1890-1910 that were made in Germany. One day, I thought that I would try making “one” santa for me………….18 years later I am still reproducing German santa candy containers and various other holiday items and loving it. Many of my pieces have been featured in Early American Life magazine for the past 13 years. Better Homes and Gardens also have featured my santas in their hard cover books and magazines as well. Although I have no professional art background, I do have an inner passion for trying to reproduce things of days gone by. It has helped greatly to have inspiration and a push from a great friend, to encourage me to attempt these fascinating dolls and the continued support of doll lovers to get the technique figured out.English wooden dolls from the 1700’s have captured my attention and tugged at my heart strings for many years. In the past year I did a lot of research and thought that I would attempt carving. Well, I still have all my fingers and I can hardly put the carving knife down. Who would have guessed? My husband is a cabinet maker/woodworker and has been very helpful and supportive of my new project. We live in cottage country about 2 hours north of Toronto, Ontario. Fortunately, we have 200 acres of bush land and a sawmill! The dolls that come from my studio to you actually grew on our property, hence the name for my doll business………”Babes from the Woods”.Theses dolls are made exactly as the old ones were 300 years ago. Basswood (Linden wood) is what the English carved them from as well. The eyes are antique glass pupiless eyes just as the old ones were. These dolls are very time consuming from start to finish and each one takes on a personality as I am working them. When finished, each is named with an appropriate name for the period when they first were made in England. They are each signed and dated as well. No two are the same as they are all hand carved individually. Their costumes are typical of the period as well and some are distressed or made with old fabrics and old trims. It is my hope to bring even more attention to these amazing dolls from the 1700’s of which so few have survived. I hope that my English wooden dolls have a special place in collections and mostly in people’s hearts, just as they do in mine.It is through the kindness of a friend and admirer of my work, I was encouraged to attempt to reproduce these amazing wooden dolls of years ago.It is my honor to present to you “Babes from the Woods” by Kathy Patterson.Enjoy and keep the sprit of the past alive.
